Originating in the Netherlands, Friesian horses are a breed of light draught horse that were highly sought after as war horses throughout continental Europe during the Middle Ages. Today, they remain immensely popular and are utilised across various branches of equestrian sport. Whether ridden, driven or harnessed, Friesians are known for their exceptional performances.

The Australian Friesian Horse Society (AFHS), established in 1983, serves as the official representative of the Royal Society “The Friesian Horse Studbook,” Koninklijke Vereniging Het Friesch Paarden Stamboek (KFPS), located in the Netherlands. The KFPS is recognized as the worldwide studbook for Friesian horses and is considered the foremost authority on the breed. Through the national societies it has organized, the KFPS oversees the World Friesian Horse Association (WFHO). Although the first Friesian horse didn’t arrive in Australia until 1977, there are now approximately 600 of these resplendent horses throughout the country.
Friesian breeding is subject to rigorous controls, with horses being recorded in specific books based on their parentage. The Australian Friesian Horse Society (AFHS) only registers Purebred Friesian horses whose lineage can be traced. More info: https://www.afhs.org.au/
On the cover, you’ll see a striking tri-colour edged sash that proudly displays the colors of the Dutch flag. This impressive accessory was worn during the AFHS Bi-Annual Keuring event and serves as a symbol of the passion and dedication that Friesian enthusiasts bring to their craft.
